Psychology and Management of Stress This assignment will evaluate theories, explain causes effects of stress, analyse relationships between stress personality, and analyse strategies or mechanisms for preventing or coping with stress. Some theories are; The cognitive approach concentrates on how a stressed individual can be made to think positively rather than negatively over a situation. It views stress as a vicious circle of negative events leading from a past event considered the trigger point for the stressor. For instance, a negative view of the past will lead on to negative views of the present, thus leading onto a negative view of the future. This process is known as the negative triad. For example, someone that had no support though school in their childhood, and did not do very well may result in a negative view of the past. Present moment, the individual has failed exams where grades are required for a job, resulting in a negative view of the present. Not getting the job they want will lead them to think that they are not good enough and have a negative view of the future whilst thinking back on the past (Hayes, 2008). Selyeââ¬â¢s stress model ââ¬ËGeneral Adaptation Syndromeââ¬â¢ 1936 shows his view on chronic exposure to stress and its three stages of response. The first response is the alarm reaction, the ââ¬Ëfight or flightââ¬â¢ response. Stress can cause responses in the body such as; sweating or urination, as this is to rid the body of excess fluids.
